The newest chapter in the story of Laughlin Ranch is one that golfers around the world will recognize.
Troon Golf is taking over management of the golf course, dining and spa services at the public facility off the Bullhead Parkway.
“Troon is one of the most recognizable names in golf,” said Bullhead City Mayor Tom Brady, who was invited to join Mohave County District 2 Sup. Hildy Angius and principals in the Laughlin Ranch-Troon venture at a get-together announcing the partnership.
“I don’t know a lot about golf myself,” admitted Art Mariner, patriarch of a development family that owns the course and its amenities. “But people tell me that Troon is the name to know.”
Mariner said that his goal is for Troon to help make Laughlin Ranch “a bigger and better place. It’s a big advantage to the golfers, the local residents, and to the visitors.”
Brady took it even further. Noting that pairing the golf course as a destination along with the Colorado River, Lake Mohave and the Laughlin casinos offering gambling, entertainment and night life could transform Bullhead City into “a Mecca for golfers.”
“And maybe put a little money in your pockets,” Brady added in a comment directed at Mariner.
“Hopefully,” Mariner replied with a nod.
Troon, billed as the world’s largest golf management company, provides services at 280 golf courses worldwide with properties in 35 states and 30 countries.
So what attracted Scottsdale-based Troon to a golf course in Bullhead City?
“The location and the quality of the golf product is right in line with Troon properties,” said Guy Sudgen, vice president of operations for Troon Golf. “It’s a destination that (golfers) would see as a good fit. We know that the Troon golfer travels. We look forward to turning this into a destination, not only for those traveling golfers but for the local residents as well.”
Mariner, Sudgen and Tom Enders, vice president for business and development for Troon, said no major changes are planned in the near future.
“We’re slowly trying to fix things as needed,” said Mariner, whose family purchased the golf, dining and spa operations a little more than a year ago.
Mariner and his wife, Dorothy, were ecstatic about having Troon aboard.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Troon to continue fulfilling our vision for Laughlin Ranch Golf Club,” said the Mariner family in a statement announcing the management agreement. “Troon is the proven leader in club management and the ideal organization to provide our club with the expertise to elevate our premier experience to even greater heights.”
Established in 2002, Laughlin Ranch features an 18-hole, David Druzisky-designed golf course, dining and spa services at The Spa at Laughlin Ranch. The golf course plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,155 yards from the back tees. The course, with the Colorado River and Laughlin’s casino district in view to the west and the Black Mountains to the east, features dramatic elevation changes, wide fairways and generously sized greens. Laughlin Ranch is ranked No. 13 on Golfweek magazine’s list of “Best Courses You Can Play in Arizona” and has been recognized as the “Best Clubhouse in the United States” by Golf Inc. magazine.
Those rankings helped make the Mariner-Troon agreement possible.
“Laughlin Ranch is a hidden gem among Arizona golf courses,” said Mitch Harrell, president of Troon Golf. “The golf course and amenities here are outstanding. Troon is looking forward to working with ownership and the onsite team to further elevate operations, food and beverage, agronomy and the overall experience.”
